Amazon today is launching a new Amazon Polly WordPress plugin that gives your blog a voice by creating audio versions of your posts. The resulting audio can be played from within the blog post itself, or accessed in podcast form using a feature called Amazon Pollycast, the company says.
The plugin itself was jointly designed by Amazon’s AWS team and managed WordPress platform provider WP Engine, and takes advantage of Amazon’s text-to-speech service, Polly.
This could be a very beneficial plugin for bloggers looking to reach a wider audience. Everyone knows how popular podcasts are. Usually, you have the ability to read transcripts of recorded podcasts. Now, it seems that this plugin can do the very opposite.
If you write interesting content and have a following of loyal readers, it may be worth trying this out. Think of the potential. Pressed for time, your readers can listen to your posts while focusing on other tasks. Driving to work in the morning comes to mind. Or how about authors who want to develop an audio version of their book? And of course, people with a disability or who have difficulty reading may find it much easier to get information this way.
Having listened to some Amazon Polly samples just now, the multitude of voices are getting ever closer to true life-like speech. While the plugin itself is free, the service does charge a small fee depending on how much text is read aloud. Still, it will be interesting to see if this gains any traction among the website development community.
