If you are a B2B freelancer, you are likely to develop a number of stereotypes about your clients. Many of these stereotypes are not going to be helpful. One of the biggest misconceptions is that only consumers use mobile devices to browse the Internet. They believe that commercial clients are going to be in their office using a desktop instead. This is one of the believes we have about other professionals. Unfortunately, it has little basis in fact.
Other professionals use mobile devices to browse the Internet all the time. They are likely using their tablet or smartphone to look at your own website.
You need to think about this very carefully. Polls show that 72% of all people will prefer a brand that has a website that is optimized for mobile traffic. That figure is likely higher with professional companies looking for another service provider because they can’t afford to risk their brand with someone that is unprofessional or doesn’t pay attention to important details. This is going to be even more important if you are in a tech-related profession. The functionality and aesthetics of your website speak volumes about your technical competencies, which is what they are eventually paying you for.
I know some designer colleagues of mine have a similar view to the professionals aren’t conducting business on mobile devices. It’s foolish to think that way, especially with no data to back it up. In my opinion, most professionals are extremely busy. They are trying to cram as much work into as little time as possible. Sure, ideally they would conduct all business through their workstation desktop. But let’s be real. Is it so hard to believe that they would do any research or work outside of their work area? What about during breaks or out of the office?
The accessibility that a mobile device allows is extremely valuable. I constantly use my smartphone for both personal and business-related web searches. It’s especially useful when there would normally be dead or down time. Such as waiting for an appointment of some sort. Because who wants to be working when they get home? Most people want to spend their free time at home for leisure, not working.
WordPress makes it easy to build a responsive website. Most up-to-date themes are now built in such a manner. Although not as frequent as in the past, I still see some websites employing mobile templates. This is where a different but similar website is served depending on the user agent (device or browser) to a visitor. I would consider this an okay solution. It often leaves tablets and mid-sized devices left somewhere in the middle, which may or may not get that mobile template version.
It is for this very reason that I implemented our 3-level website method. The first level being the fullwidth website you would see on a desktop. Level 2 takes that fullwidth website and applies a responsive format that begins to stack content vertically. The final level serves a different mobile template that is optimized for speed and performance on older devices. The user can switch between this and the mobile website with a tap of a button. Having this feature will increase compatibility across all devices so that no visitor is left behind. The goal is to convert every potential visitor into a customer. Therefore, a pleasant user experience should be strived for no matter who is browsing your website!
