We are often asked by our users how to do keyword research for their WordPress blogs. Keyword research helps you find betters content ideas that will help you grow traffic and create highly engaging content that users will love. In this article, we will show you how to properly do keyword research for your WordPress blog.
What is Keyword Research and Why You Need it?
Keyword research is a research technique used by content creators and SEO experts. It helps you discover words users enter into search engines to find content, products, and services in your industry.
You can then use those words and phrases into your website to get more search traffic.
Many beginners assume that they have a clear idea of what their users are looking for. However, you don’t need to make educated guesses when there are powerful tools available that can help you make data-driven decisions.
If you want your blog to be discovered and make some money from it, keyword research is a must. Of course, I favor SE Ranking’s keyword research tool. It’s wide range of options, accurate tracking, and affordability make it a great option for finding and monitoring hot keywords in any particular industry. The article does mention two very popular tools – SEMRush and Ahrefs. I’ve also used both of them on a limited basis. They’re also excellent for keyword research but tend to be more on the pricier side.
Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools are both free and will give insight into popular keywords that are linked to your website for search queries. Google’s Search Console, a toolset within Webmaster Tools, integrates nicely with SE Ranking. You’ll be able to identify and track keyword impressions and positions for certain terms you might’ve not been aware of. Impressions are very important, but clicks are the most important aspect of keyword research.
Clicks tell you which terms convert the best for search queries. You may have a 1000 impressions for a term with no clicks. This typically means it is a good candidate to track and target that keyword. On the other side of the scale, it isn’t unusual to have a term get 10 impressions with 5 clicks. The most likely scenario, in this case, are visitors who are specifically looking for your brand or product. So if your business is named “Best Guys Plumbing”, you can assume that people are actively trying to find your business if the impression to click ratio is high.
The important thing to remember with targeting and researching keywords is that you need to be patient. It takes time and effort to effectively move targeted keywords up in the search engines. Backlinks, optimization and other factors have to be implemented in a consistent manner. It’s hard work, but the pay off will be huge if you can keep it up.
