WordPress 5.0 release gets pushed back by a week

WordPress 5.0 release gets pushed back by a week

Nov 10, 2018

WordPress 5.0 should be a significant update for one of the most popular content management systems on the planet. Instead, it feels like it’s a change that nobody asked for or wants. I think the WordPress team has missed the boat with the block-level editor Gutenberg. Perhaps if it was released a few years ago when other premium builders were gaining popularity, the excitement among developers and designers would be heightened.

Evaluating website performance with optimization and benchmarking tools

Evaluating website performance with optimization and benchmarking tools

Jul 27, 2018

I would hope the very first thing that a web design company would do after finishing a site for a client is to run a speed test. It’s one thing to have an amazing looking site. It’s quite another to have that website load quickly and without any hiccups. As a designer, there has to be a balance between aesthetics, speed, and the needs of your client. Having a widget that affects loading time, for instance, should be taken into consideration. Is it necessary? Will it have value to your visitors?

Should you implement breadcrumbs on your website? How do they affect SEO?

Should you implement breadcrumbs on your website? How do they affect SEO?

Jul 13, 2018

While the team at yoast seems to conclude that breadcrumbs should be used in every instance, I think small websites might actually suffer from them. Large websites with many deep levels of content stand the most to benefit from breadcrumbs. It is helpful for both Google and visitors to navigate through sections of websites. However, if you’re a small business with a standard 5 to 10 page website, does it really make sense?

Gutenberg hysteria: preparing for the next WordPress update

Gutenberg hysteria: preparing for the next WordPress update

Jul 3, 2018

Perhaps I am being a little too harsh calling the worry over Gutenberg hysteria. As a designer and developer, I like to tinker around with code, platforms, programs and such. I learn best this way. There are also plenty of guides online which can help teach whatever it is you desire to learn. If there is a problem, Google it. Chances are someone in a forum has posted a similar issue.

Flaw in WordPress core remains unpatched since November

Flaw in WordPress core remains unpatched since November

Jun 29, 2018

If it weren’t for the fact that “Author” privileges are needed for this attack, this bug would be huge. Usually, the WordPress team are very quick to correct flaws that have been pointed out to them. It’s hard to believe that this particular flaw has not been fixed since it was first discovered in November.

Yoast bug may have negatively impacted your rankings

Yoast bug may have negatively impacted your rankings

Jun 4, 2018

As an avid user of yoast on all of the WordPress sites I’ve built, I’ve been pretty impressed with just how efficient and organized the plugin is. When I read the news about this bug, it was shocking on a few different levels. For one, the Yoast team has always been thorough with the features they offer and introduce. Having an option inadvertently reset to a potentially harmful setting just didn’t seem possible. Alas, accidents happen.

My Favorite Security Plugin

My Favorite Security Plugin

Mar 1, 2018

When WordPress administrators are searching for a security plugin, usually Wordfence Security comes out on top. And for good reason. With over 2 million active installations across the community, it is by far the most popular security plugin. Does that mean it is the best? I think that is a matter of opinion. There is certainly no shortage of features. The support is great and regular plugin updates occur frequently. Still, I prefer a less popular but widely used plugin – All In One WP Security & Firewall. I briefly went over one of my favorite features of the plugin...

My Struggle With Gzip

My Struggle With Gzip

Jan 8, 2018

I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays! After months of periodic troubleshooting, I finally solved my gzip compression mystery. The strange part is that it worked fine on all my websites for the root domain/homepage. However, any other page besides the homepage would result in no compression. It was a painstakingly tedious process of elimination. Usually, I can find an answer to a technical problem by scouring Google. And while I did come across a few other folks who described the same issue I was having, there were no solutions. Before I dive into my own solution, I’ll explain what GZIP...

Eliminating Contact Form Failures: Part 2

Eliminating Contact Form Failures: Part 2

Dec 4, 2017

In Part 1 of Eliminating Contact Form Failures I showed you how to set up and configure Contact Form 7. I also detailed how you can drastically reduce spam by using Google’s ReCaptcha service. In this concluding post, I’ll go over how you can save your contact form messages and have those messages sent through SMTP instead of PHP. Saving contact form responses Even if you have properly configured your server or hosting environment, it is impossible to guarantee a 100% success rate of contact form submissions. The one thing that can be done is to have submissions saved to...

Eliminating Contact Form Failures: Part 1

Eliminating Contact Form Failures: Part 1

Nov 29, 2017

You finally have your business website up and running and have made sure your contact information is easily accessible. Typically, you would have your phone number, email address, and perhaps physical address listed so that visitors can connect with you directly. You probably had a contact form set up and tested too. Everything seems great until one of those visitors calls or emails you and says they sent a message through the form but did not receive a reply. Or they filled out the form and immediately after had an error message pop up indicating a failure in sending the...
