While the team at yoast seems to conclude that breadcrumbs should be used in every instance, I think small websites might actually suffer from them. Large websites with many deep levels of content stand the most to benefit from breadcrumbs. It is helpful for both Google and visitors to navigate through sections of websites. However, if you’re a small business with a standard 5 to 10 page website, does it really make sense?

When I talk to other website designers, they all understand the importance of SEO. A lot of them think that content and backlinks are the only really important factors when it comes to ranking for terms. They’re right in the sense that both of these things are crucial to achieving good rankings for targeted keywords. However, not too many value the other factors such as on-site optimization. This doesn’t just mean how well or fast a website performs for a visitor, but also how the content is structured.

It definitely is frustrating when you spend a lot of time optimizing a page for a keyword and not have it shown on the results pages. Even more so when another page that you are not targeting is listed for that keyword. Unfortunately, we can’t control how Google sees our websites and pages. All we can do is follow their guidelines and steer Google in the right direction.
