I can’t help but admire these young entrepreneurs in the tech sector that have built their business from virtually nothing. Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, is probably the most notable from this group over the last twenty years. Sure, some of it is luck and having the right connections. However, it certainly can’t be easy to build such a business and sustain it in its infancy. I’m sure a lot of dedication and sacrifices must be made in order to be successful in such a manner.

WordPress 4.9.7 patches security flaws

The nice thing about these security updates is that they should be automatic unless explicity configured not to update. This certainly comes in handy when you manage dozens or even hundreds of WordPress websites for clients. Not having to manually update each site lessens the time (and risk) for a patched exploit to be abused on older installations. If you generally use the same admin email across all of your websites, you should get a notification about a successful automatic upgrade for those sites. It’s a welcomed reassurance that your sites are safe from a potentially dangerous vulnerability.

Redirecting visitors to random blog posts in WordPress

While I understand the purpose for redirecting users to random posts. I’m not sure it is practical. The idea is for visitors to discover old posts so that content still has relevance. It make sense. However, it is no secret how most blog posts are found in the first place. Through organic searches of course.

Perhaps I am being a little too harsh calling the worry over Gutenberg hysteria. As a designer and developer, I like to tinker around with code, platforms, programs and such. I learn best this way. There are also plenty of guides online which can help teach whatever it is you desire to learn. If there is a problem, Google it. Chances are someone in a forum has posted a similar issue.

Last year, Chrome slowly began to implement the “Not Secure” message on non-https websites. Specifically, where a contact form was present. Now, no matter what page a user is on in Chrome 68, that message will be clearly visible. Thankfully, it isn’t as shocking as some predicted. There is no giant red x or stop sign next to the warning. I think that visual cue alone would have even made a bigger impact.

Flaw in WordPress core remains unpatched since November

If it weren’t for the fact that “Author” privileges are needed for this attack, this bug would be huge. Usually, the WordPress team are very quick to correct flaws that have been pointed out to them. It’s hard to believe that this particular flaw has not been fixed since it was first discovered in November.

Google rebrands Adwords and DoubleClick as Google Ads

It’s hard to imagine that Google is dropping the moniker – Adwords – which has been so heavily associated with Pay-per-click. Then again, a lot of success for Google can be attributed to them embracing change. Having an all-encompassing marketing platform under one umbrella should help to attract and direct new business owners. Youtube, for example, has seen a resurgence thanks to millennials and the demand for instructional and opinionated videos. As we see the decline in cable tv usage, it makes perfect sense to capitalize on this shift towards internet advertising.

Automattic acquires start-up company Atavist

This is an interesting acquisition by the team behind WordPress. The WordPress platform already provides an outlet for writers and bloggers that make it easy to promote content. It does seem like, the paywall features that Atavist incorporates might be the primary reason for the buyout.

Google appears to have removed anonymous reviews for businesses

I consider the removal of anonymous reviews on Google to be a good thing. It won’t stop those who are determined to influence a business one way or another. A person can still create fake accounts and post reviews under a pseudonym. At least now extra steps must be taken in order to do. Fake online reviews have been a plague for some time now.
