Bing is testing a new feature in search result links

July 12, 2018 News

News Courtesy of thesempost.com:

Bing is running a limited test right now in their search results that allows searchers to open individual search results in a new tab automatically.

Here is what it looks like:

As you can see, when you mouseover an individual result, it shows a new tab icon, with a “Click here to open in a new tab.”

Bing is doing this for both the regular search results as well as for Bing Ads results too.

Ryan’s Take

Oh how I wish I could see this rolled out on a widescale basis. Of course, I haven’t switched over to Bing as my preferred search engine, but small enhancements like this could shift the scale a little. It may seem like a simple addition, but when you’re constantly googling throughout the day this small change is a time-saver. I ALWAYS open search results in a new tab. More times than not I find myself checking multiple web pages in a search query. This usually involves 3 actions that must be performed to open a new tab.

Action #1 – Right-clicking on a link to open the context window. Action #2 – Slight mouse movement to hover over “Open in New Window” option. Action #3 – Left-clicking to open in new tab. Since I can’t see this new test in my Bing searches, I’m not sure if the new tab button also makes it the active window. That would shorten things up even further. So you’re essentially taking 3 actions and reducing them to 1.

Some of you might be saying.. “Ctrl+Shift+Click does open a new tab active window!”. It sure does and speeds things up considerably. However, I’d rather see this feature on the website level rather than a shortcut key. The fact is, you still need two hands to perform this function. As someone who works through breaks and lunches often, I need that other hand for beverages, food, and what have you. Multi-tasking is critical to getting the most out of my days. There isn’t a lot of awareness of Ctrl+Shift+Click too. Adding a small window icon on search result hovers won’t hinder the search experience. I’m surprised it isn’t something that was implemented ages ago.
