Redirecting visitors to random blog posts in WordPress

Do you want to redirect users to a random post? A random post allows users to explore older articles and read posts that are hidden in your blog archives. In this article, we will show you how to easily redirect users to a random post in WordPress.

Why You Should Redirect Users to a Random Post?

By default, WordPress posts appear in reverse chronological order (from newest to oldest), so your users will read the latest post first. If you write regularly on your blog, then your users may not be able to discover your older articles.

One way to overcome this issue is to display random posts in the sidebar of your blog. It will allow your users to discover new content while increasing your page views.

You can also redirect users to a random post from 404 error pages or add a ‘Surprise Me’ button in your blogs custom archive page which takes users to a random post.

Ryan’s Take

While I understand the purpose for redirecting users to random posts. I’m not sure it is practical. The idea is for visitors to discover old posts so that content still has relevance. It make sense. However, it is no secret how most blog posts are found in the first place. Through organic searches of course.

If you write good content or discuss important topics, your post will be discovered eventually. You’ll need to promote that content on social media and other business profiles to get more visibility. Maybe I’m wrong but I think user intent is the driving factor for finding content. People aren’t looking to be ‘surprised’ with a random article.

Now, if you have a niche website that has category-sensitive content it might be useful. I can see having a recipe website with a random button. Or a fitness blog that has a random option for bringing up a post about a particular exercise. For the most part though, having a chronological order to posts has worked and will continue to do so. Those who are interested in your writing will follow the blog and read at their own pace. New visitors who value the blog will probably search through it for other information they are seeking.
