As of cPanel & WHM version 74, we will begin to deprecate our support of SquirrelMail, one of our bundled webmail applications. Users of cPanel and Web Hosting Manager have always had a choice between 3 webmail clients. These cleints: Horde, Roundcube, and SquirrelMail perform the basic function of accessing email through a web interface. However, their appearance and feautres differ greatly.
Having tried all 3 of them, I found SquirrelMail to be the least aesthetically pleasing. According to cPanel it hasn’t been updated since 2013. The interface looks like it is about a decade old. In contrast, both Horde and Roundcube have a sleek and a modern appearance. I prefer Roundcube as my client. It might not be as robust as Horde, but for my needs, the extra features are unnecessary. It works great for viewing and managing my emails on desktop. On my phone, I use bluemail to combine all of my email accounts, and therefore don’t need a webmail interface.
Unlike myself, a lot of people appreciate the simplicity of SquirrelMail. It can still be used as a custom webmail application after support ends. Since the application hasn’t been updated in several years, there could be potential security risks which may compromise your server. If you’re currently using SquirrelMail, it is definitely worth looking into switching over to another application.
