WordPress Now Powers 30% of the Internet
Over the last 15 years, the popularity and usage of WordPress has been steadily growing. That growth hit a significant milestone this month when W3Techs reported that WordPress now powers over 30% of sites on the web.
The percentage is determined based on W3Techs’ review of the top 10 million sites on the web, and it’s a strong indicator of the popularity and flexibility of WordPress as a platform.

This is simply incredible. I am pretty good at detecting a WordPress website. Viewing the source code or even putting /wp-login.php at the end of the domain makes it easy to know. I see a lot of small businesses using the WordPress platform. But it has also expanded much further than small businesses. Schools, Police Departments, Clinics are starting to migrate over to WordPress. The fact that it is free and not proprietary allows designers and developers to save costs. Costs that before, were passed along to their clients.
The community support has been overwhelming. There are plenty of decent free themes and plugins available. Premium items usually don’t cost a fortune either. What I really like about WordPress, however, is how user-friendly the backend is. If you have a client that likes to be more hands-on with their business, they’ll most likely want access to the dashboard. It is easy enough to give them limited access so that they can make blog posts or minor page adjuments. You don’t have to give them administrator access and worry about messing up the website.
With WordPress 5.0 slated for later this year, it is an exciting time to be a designer. It doesn’t look like there will be any slowing down and I won’t be surprised if 50% of websites are powered by WordPress in 5 years.
