Google may soon introduce public comments to its search results. The feature was discovered by 9to5Google in an APK teardown of the latest Google App, indicating the feature is coming soon. One of the first uses of the feature is likely to be commenting on live sports games.
9to5Google made the discovery in a section of the app called “Your Contributions.” Clicking on this section brings up two panels: one for reviews and one for comments. There, the app explains that users will be able to add comments to sports games on Google while the games are live.
Currently, it seems that a commenting feature is enabled for soccer (football) match results for popular teams. For instance, searching for Brazil national football team will display a green-themed infobox. Details such as matches, players, and news are available to view. Clicking on the matches tab takes the visitor to a list of past and upcoming matches. Results with videos, in the cases I’ve tested, have a comments section within them.
I expect that this feature will expand to other info-style box search results. What would surprise me is if normal results transform into a Reddit style system with comments, likes, upvotes and such. That would make it way too convoluted and unnecessary. Google has spent a fortune perfecting algorithm and continuing to do so. There is no need for a social aspect to be integrated.
Since Google Plus will no longer be supported in the coming months, perhaps the reason behind adding comments is to boost user engagement. A lot of sports fans are very passionate and vocal about their teams. It’s the perfect opportunity to test this feature and then determine what other subjects might benefit from commenting. Maybe we’ll see it implemented in other hot topics such as popular tv show episodes.
