There was nothing out of the ordinary that I noticed this week for my own website rankings. I know that some website owners and administrators are still reeling from the medic update that occurred about a month ago. I would expect that Google wouldn’t roll out any more major changes for at least another month or so. They seem to be focused on cosmetic changes at the moment.
I have to say, the image search interface is very visually appealing. I appreciate the similar search terms directly below the query with related pictures. Notice the rounded borders encircling these terms? It fits the new style of the address bar in the latest version of Chrome.
How time flies. I’ve been browsing the internet since the mid-90’s, but I’m hard-pressed to recall what search engine I used before Google came into existence back in 1998. Yahoo? Or maybe Altavista? Whatever it was, it’s now a distant memory.
They aren’t exaggerating when saying thousands of websites are affected. ZDNet provided an example of a Google search query that contained malicious javascript code. The results of this query are now over 9,000. These websites range from law firms to non-profit organizations. Some of the websites I checked still had this garbage code sprawled all over their home page.
I should’ve realized a long time ago the referral traffic that can be gained from Quora. They’ve had a firm grip on question-form search queries for years now. Specifically, questions that begin with do or does. It’s quite common to find a result from Quora on the first page of Google when used in that context. I believe that in order to succeed in obtaining Quora referral traffic, your answers need to be deep and informative. Since the links are no-follow you won’t get any SEO juice, but if you target questions that pertain to your business or niche, that becomes irrelevant.
I must’ve missed the August 3rd outage. I don’t recall it affecting me. I do remember the September 3rd outage that lasted roughly 90 minutes. Perhaps Facebook will go for the trifecta with an October 3rd blackout?
I must’ve received over 50 of these emails this week for the various websites I manage. Back in April, I reported getting my first notice for mobile-first indexing. I do find it strange that Google feels the need to inform webmasters of this via email. Why not just have it pop up in Google Search.
As popular as Duplicator is, I’ve never used yet on the dozens of websites I’ve migrated from or to my server over my career. I’ve had great success with both All-in-One WP Migration and Backup Guard for moving websites. They each offer a premium version, however, I’ve had no problems using the free options for either. At some point, I plan to purchase one of them with a developer license, since there is a little extra legwork required for importing databases into the new server.

I recently discovered that several of my blog posts reviewing certain services had lost their rich snippet feature in Google’s index. Rich snippets give an important edge to help your indexed pages stand out from other results. They feature a little visual flair to catch the attention of searchers. In the case of review rich snippets, a star rating with the author’s name is displayed below title tag and URL, and above the meta description.
