Political ads on Google are getting more transparent. You can now easily find them all cataloged on a new company website that tracks who is buying what and for how much.
Launched on Wednesday, the new site offers an eye-opening view of how online political ad spending can work. It offers a breakdown on ad spending by state, who the biggest buyers are, and which popular Google keywords the ads have appeared with.
We live in a sensitive time where politics have created a rift between family and friends. People are entrenched in their beliefs and any type of rational argument typically results in anger. If you’re not cautious and let those feelings spill out in a public forum, it could have severe consequences. Careers can be shattered with just one tweet.
In order to maintain a level of neutrality, Google has put together this website breaking down Ad spend for various political campaigns. It’s a nice concept, allowing searchers to look up their favored candidates and rivals. Although using their search feature, it appears they still need to work out a few bugs. Several ads that displayed were broken when clicked on.
People are still reeling from the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. The upcoming mid-term elections are becoming increasingly intense with negative ad attacks coming from all sides. I think to have a catalog of all these ads, even if it is just the ones featured on Google, is a good thing. You can see how much a campaign has spent on advertising and start to form your own opinions.
Perhaps a lesser-known candidate is going up against an established candidate with a massive budget. Transparency with money spent should help to determine those candidates trying to bury their opponents with a flood of advertisements. Thus, allowing us searchers to get a more accurate picture of just how much power and influence one particular candidate has over the other. In my opinion, this new website from Google is a win for the little guy.
